Organising the Wake

Some people like to organise a reception or ‘wake’ to take place after the funeral service is over.

This can be something simple such as inviting close family and friends back to your home for tea and cake, meeting friends and family for an informal get-together in a local park or gardens, or maybe organising a more formal event at a favourite pub or hotel.

Wherever it takes place, it is an opportunity for people to remember the deceased, share stories and favourite memories. Often, people will play music which was special to their loved one, display photographs of happy times or provide a Memorial Book in which guests can write the memories and feelings about the deceased.

Some also like to provide guests with small memorial gifts such as wildflower or forget-me-not seeds to plant.

Whatever you decide to do, remember that its purpose is to help the grieving process begin.
